In this Industry Spotlight with Creative First, filmmaker Kanu Behl joined Lohita Sujith, Sr. Director, Copyright & Digital Economy, Motion Picture Association, to share insights into his creative journey and the transformative impact of Film Bazaar on his work. Known for his debut feature Titli, which was nominated for the Camera d’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Kanu reflects on the developmental milestones that shaped the film. Titli went through the NFDC Screenwriters Lab, the Co-Production Market, and the Work in Progress Lab, ultimately winning the post-production award in 2013.
Kanu describes Film Bazaar as a “game-changer,” highlighting how the mentorship and exposure elevated his script to balance local authenticity with universal resonance. He credits the lab for helping him refine his screenplay’s core meaning and the co-production market for expanding his professional network and understanding of international filmmaking dynamics. These experiences also informed his subsequent India-France co-production, Agra.
During the post-production phase, Titli benefited from fresh perspectives offered by international mentors, which helped fine-tune the film’s edit. The post-production award further bolstered the film’s visibility, underscoring the value of perseverance in independent filmmaking.
For aspiring filmmakers, Kanu emphasizes the importance of courage, honesty, and openness to feedback. He advises participants to approach Film Bazaar with well-developed scripts and a willingness to listen and adapt. Reflecting on the challenges of independent cinema, Kanu underscores the need for resilience and a commitment to pushing creative boundaries despite external pressures.
