Piracy has evolved into a sophisticated criminal enterprise, fuelled by illegal IPTV services, hacked set-top boxes, unauthorised signal redistribution, rogue streaming platforms and increasingly organised syndicated piracy networks. Far from being a victimless crime, piracy undermines investment in premium content, causes significant economic losses, distorts legitimate markets and is increasingly linked to organised crime, money laundering and other illicit activities. As India seeks to strengthen its position as a global content hub, this session will examine whether the current legal and regulatory framework is equipped to tackle modern piracy and what policy, enforcement and cross-sector collaboration are needed to disrupt criminal networks, protect consumers and safeguard India’s creative economy.
