In this Industry Spotlight with Creative First, Producer & Founder, Roy Kapur Films, Siddharth Roy Kapur joined Lohita Sujith, Sr. Director of Copyright & Digital Economy at Motion Picture Association, to discuss the film industry landscape, amendments to the cinematographic act and new government initiatives.

The discussion started on a positive note with the return of numbers for cinemas and theatres to pre-COVID levels.

Siddharth will soon receive the “Motion Picture Association (MPA) Asia Pacific Copyright Educator of the Year” Award at CineAsia 2023 and on the topic, shared brief insights about the importance of copyright. He extended his gratitude to those who have made it very evident that stealing creative property is illegal. In particular, he thanked the government for their efforts so far and new initiatives being introduced to further curb piracy.

Siddharth further highlighted the accessibility of content, and in particular how Indian cinema can become more accessible to the rest of the world. His key advice was to unabashedly be Indian and authentic rather than reverse-engineer content as “crossover” content. He said core human emotions will strike a chord with multiple audiences and used Dangal’s success in China as evidence.

The conversation also touched upon multiple other topics including: new incentives offered by the government, AI, and the way to walk the line between art and commercials in filmmaking.

Before wrapping up, Siddharth spoke about his recent projects such as Tumse Na Ho Payega on Zee5, Pippa on Amazon Prime, and his many upcoming projects such as Deva starring Shahid Kapoor.
