In this episode of Industry Spotlight by Creative First, Stephan Bugaj, Senior Vice President of Gen AI Content and Technology at JioStar Group and Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Innovation in Emerging Media, joined Lohita Sujith, Sr. Director, Copyright & Digital Economy, Motion Picture Association, to discuss the evolving role of artificial intelligence in storytelling, the future of interactive entertainment, and the importance of preserving human creativity and copyright in an AI-driven content ecosystem.

Stephan reflected on a career spanning animation, gaming, and storytelling, explaining that innovation has always been driven by experimentation with new technologies and storytelling formats. He argued that the most compelling stories balance familiarity with originality, delivering experiences that are “the same but different.”

Discussing his move to JioStar, Stephan described India as one of the world’s most exciting markets for AI-powered storytelling, citing its creative talent, scale, and openness to innovation. He believes India’s rich storytelling traditions and willingness to embrace new technologies make it uniquely positioned to lead the next wave of AI-assisted entertainment.

A major focus of the conversation was the relationship between AI, human creativity, and copyright. Stephan emphasized that storytelling remains a fundamentally human act, with audiences seeking emotional connections that technology alone cannot provide. While AI can accelerate ideation, experimentation, and creative workflows, he stressed that human judgment, artistic intent, and copyright protections remain essential to sustaining creative industries.

The conversation also turned to the future of interactive entertainment, with Stephan arguing that AI will expand rather than replace traditional storytelling. He described AI as a creative collaborator that empowers storytellers to generate new ideas, overcome creative obstacles, and enhance their creative process, while leaving the fundamental principles of narrative unchanged.

Speaking about JioStar’s approach, Stephan highlighted the company’s use of AI to develop more ambitious productions, explore underserved genres, and deliver more personalized experiences while preserving shared cultural moments that bring audiences together. Drawing lessons from the gaming industry, he encouraged creators to embrace AI as a tool that amplifies their creative voice rather than replacing it.

Looking ahead, Stephan predicted that while AI will continue to transform content creation, audiences will increasingly value shared experiences, live events, and communal storytelling. For him, the future of entertainment lies in combining technological innovation with the enduring power of human connection.
