Innovation Driven by Craft and Curiosity
In conversation with Tyrone Estephan, Managing Director of the Alt Group, Alt.vfx

In this episode of Industry Spotlight with Creative First, Tyrone Estephan, Managing Director of the Alt Group at Alt.vfx, joined Lohita Sujith, Sr. Director, Copyright & Digital Economy, Motion Picture Association, to reflect on his journey into visual storytelling and the evolving intersection of technology, creativity, and production in the visual effects industry.

Tyrone traced his early passion for storytelling from childhood through various creative pursuits, eventually leading him into VFX. Entering the industry without formal film school training, he emphasized persistence, adaptability, and a willingness to seek out creative environments aligned with his interests.

The conversation explored his evolution across leading studios, where he described himself as a “renegade” unbound by convention. He highlighted the influence of his time at Animal Logic, where a culture of craftsmanship and rigor shaped his approach. Carrying these values forward, he fostered a mindset of creative disruption, encouraging teams to embrace constraints and find innovative solutions.

Tyrone spoke about integrating design, technology, and storytelling, and his early adoption of emerging tools such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. Identifying a gap in industry experimentation, he built teams focused on innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration, pushing the boundaries of traditional visual storytelling.

A key focus of the discussion was artificial intelligence as an evolving creative tool. Tyrone noted its immediate impact on backend efficiencies – pipelines, automation, and workflow optimization, while acknowledging its growing role in ideation. He emphasized that AI is most effective when used to enhance, not replace, human creativity.

Addressing concerns around AI-generated content, he pointed to a gap in production-level craftsmanship. High-quality output, he stressed, still requires expertise, time, and creative intent. Even in replication, his team’s experiments revealed that meaningful results demand significant effort, reinforcing the enduring importance of craft.

The discussion also touched on opportunities for creators in India, where Tyrone praised the quality of emerging work while emphasizing the need to refine the “last 5%” of production, often the difference between good and exceptional. He highlighted collaboration, mentorship, and cross-cultural exchange as key to raising creative standards.

Looking ahead, Tyrone expressed optimism about the future of visual storytelling. As AI evolves, he sees potential for deeper collaboration between creative and technical disciplines. He concluded that while tools will continue to change, storytelling and creative intent will remain central, with technology serving as an enabler rather than a replacement.
