In this Industry Spotlight with Creative First, writer & director Varun Grover, joined Lohita Sujith, Sr. Director, Copyright & Digital Economy, Motion Picture Association for a discussion on key moments over the trajectory of his career, and in particular, the role of Film Bazaar in supporting independent cinema.

He reflected on the challenges of making his debut film All India Rank, which took nearly a decade to complete. He recalled how the process was delayed as he worked on other major projects, including Masaan and Sacred Games, and how the transition from writing to directing initially filled him with self-doubt. Varun also mentioned the key moments that helped build his confidence, including his involvement with NFDC’s Script Lab and his participation in the Toronto International Film Festival mentorship program.

Varun illustrated the significance of Film Bazaar in promoting independent Indian cinema and providing valuable exposure to filmmakers. He explained how his participation in the co-production market allowed him to engage with international buyers and producers, thus opening doors for potential collaborations. He made a note of mentioning about the unique sense of community he experienced there, with filmmakers supporting one another’s projects, sharing in each other’s successes, and maintaining connections long after the event. Varun highlighted that such opportunities are crucial, especially in an industry where independent filmmakers often lack a strong support system.

Additionally, Varun shared advice for young filmmakers, encouraging them to embrace their unique voices and original stories, instead of succumbing to external pressures to conform to Western expectations. He also stressed the importance of being well-read, advising aspiring writers to cultivate a deep passion for books, which he believes is essential to becoming a good writer. As for his future plans, Varun revealed that he is working on two exciting film projects—The Fable, for which he wrote the Hindi dialogues, and Superboys of Malegaon, for which he penned the screenplay. Both films have garnered attention, with Superboys of Malegaon recently premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. Varun is also preparing for a stand-up special titled Nothing Makes Sense, planning a nationwide tour in January, followed by a recording in February and a release in the coming months.
